What is malaria?
Malaria is a tropical disease passed on to humans by mosquitoes, and is present in over 100 countries. Around 2,000 cases of malaria are brought back into the UK each year from returning travellers.
Malaria is found throughout the world from South and Central America, Asia and Africa. It is most prevelent in countries where the climate is hot and humid, where there are poor preventative measures, treatments and medical supplies and where there is poor drainage of stagnant waters.
Malaria can be fatal and travellers are advised to take suitable precautions including malaria prophylaxis medication where appropriate, using good insect repellents containing DEET (e.g.Jungle Formula) and taking precautions to prevent insect bites. Almost two thirds of all cases of malari-related deaths occur amongst the poorest 20% of the world's population.
Malaria prophylaxis is available for specific areas of the world. Some areas have developed resistance to some of the older treatments. You should ensure that you select the correct treatments for the areas you are visiting . If you are unsure please contact us for the latest information.
